A Weekend In HK

I tried my best to prepare Andi for Hong Kong (HK). HK is Asia and Asia is an entirely different world. No words can describe the vibrancy, the smells, the sights or the population of HK. I told Andi to expect busy, but when we made it to the streets even "busy" looked around thought "Holy Shit!"

We arrived early on Saturday morning and were promptly picked up by a friend and taken back to his place in the suburbs. We then slept for the morning and come mid-afternoon we headed into the city to see what it was all about. We jumped onto the Metro Line (MTR) which took us deep under ground into the heart of Kowloon. I will never forget the look on Andi's face as she ascended the staircase and first set eyes upon the streets of HK. The looked was a cross between "WTF" and "What The Shit." It was a electronics street market and people were hawking everything imaginable from cell phones to power tools. Needless to say that once the initial shock value wore off Andi and I were deep into the bargain hunting. This hunting continued for three consecutive days.

Short breaks were taken to check out the Big Budda, watch some playoff hockey (insert choking sound here (FLAMES I AM LOOKING AT YOU)) and wander the streets of this very cool city.

We had a blast while we were here and the main reason for this was our great hosts. Jeff and Eniko big props to you guys, thank you very much! We also enjoyed how cheap things were; the shopping was fantastic. I got lots of little do-dads for my computer, a gong and some other electronic stuffs. That said on street corners alone I could have purchase but limited too:

  • turtles,

  • birds,

  • clothing,

  • paintings,

  • fish,

  • vegetables,

  • handbags,

  • powertools,

  • cell phones and assceories,

  • goldfish,

  • cats and dogs,

  • make up,

  • suits,

  • eels,

  • shrimp,

  • and lighters.

A lot of it was general crap but it was just fun to cruise around and see things available on the street compared to in a expensive shop. That said it was tough to get around the crowds of people. It was like Christmas eve at chinook center at 5:30 PM but busier and more crowded. I am happy to say that I never once did get crowd rage, which could be very easy here.

The last few photos are what happens when you drink to much and have time on you hands waiting for trains to show up. Good Times :).

Here is an animation of the kick ass times.
